Recently, someone called me a peasant(农民). Basically someone who does not know any branded goods / or someone come from country side.

Yup! I wear a cheap Casio Watch. What to do, I got no money mah!

Often I wonder, is it worth to buy branded goods? Or good things are just too expensive? Often I go for quality products but not branded. Sometime, quality products are branded, and I cannot afford them.

Take for example, I own a Macbook Pro. Most people like it because it look nice and trendy. For me, that is skin deep. The main reason I bought a Macbook Pro is because it runs a decent graphic card that is necessary for me to run my Simulation work. Well that has to do with GPGPU, General-Purpose computation on GPUs. I will explain more about it in the future, if I have the time.

Hey, you are an IT guy, that is not a fair things to start with. Let start with something is that more fashionable, like watch.

All my life, I have been wearing nothing else but Casio watch. Why? Cheap and good mah. At least it can last for 3-4 years lah. Since I have no knowledge about Watch. Probably we can explore a little bit about Branded Watch or Fine Watch.

Some watch brand that I think I know-
Casio, Seiko, Citizen, Swatch and Fossil.

Some slightly better watch brand that I think I know-
Rolex, Omega, Longines, Tissot, Tag Heuer, Raymond Weil and Cartier.

Some Fashion brand that does watch-
Boss, Gucci, Versace, Emporio Armani, Mont Blanc, Chanel, and Guess.

Well there are many other brands that I think appears in Stores.
I am not too familiar with all these brand.

So, is that good enough?
Well knowing all these brand is not enough. Actually it goes down to technical stuff. First thing I learned is a term known as Tourbillon.

Trip to Warwick

Last Saturday, I went to a trip to Warwick Castle. Again, organised by the Student Union of course. I forgot my memory card and only discovered it after I started the journey. So I end up purchasing the memory from the store at Warwick.

It was quite worth it, only £19 pounds for the trip. The entrance ticket worth £18, if I go myself (See the photos). I suppose the Student Union has some deals with them. I got to dress up myself for battle. So are you ready? Could you spot something interesting in the photos?

Hint: there are real people dressed up, and some not real people look extremely real.

Trip to Cambridge

Went to Cambridge recently. This is my second time goes there and get to see more things.

First of all, there is this Gonville and Caius College, that has 3 gates. It is the gate of Humility, Virtue and Honour. The students have to pass through the gate of humility in their first year and then virtue the second. Passing through the gate of honour is for graduation. There is actually another gate. The gate of need, as the students there would name it. It is the gate to the toilet.

Next, is definitely the Newton's apple tree. I did wanted to seat underneath it. Too bad it is nothing on the tree at this time of the year.

Next, follows by the punting on the backs. I get to see most the bridge on River Cam. (Hey, that is where is Cambridge gets it name) It is spring, so it is not too cold.
Well there is also a bridge of sigh in Cambridge - (1831 AD) too, similar to Oxford (1914 AD).

Well, I like the mathematical bridge the most, as it comes with Myth.
That the bridge was designed and built by newton. It was so perfect that the planks were laid one on top of the other and held together by their weight and the angles by which they were put together. Some students were so intrigued and in awe of its architecture that they took it apart to see how it was built. Their downfall was that they could not piece it back together again and therefore the bridge is now held together by nuts, bolts and screws.

Sheffield in Snow

Since yesterday, there were heavy snow fall, especially yesterday night. When I walk around this morning, the snow it's about an inch thick. This probably is the only snow Sheffield will get this year. Too bad I don't have a snow sledge, but did saw some kids playing with theirs. I was on a trip to Germany to my friend house during New Year for a Week. I did not take much photos for that week. Well it was snowing for the whole week in Germany and the temperature was sub zero. I landed on Frankfurt airport and my friend pick me up to his place.

The cheapest version cost less than £20,000 (SGD 60,000).

I found out more about this story - His Dark Materials. Little did I know that it is a trilogy, until the very end of part 1. The most interesting part for me is actually oxford which I have just went. Luckily it is not as long winded as "The Chronicles of Narnia" or "Harry Potter".

Do you know a police, a soldier and a scientist for the past 20 years?

All my older friends is turning up and I get to see them again!!! Recently just saw the police again (Back on July 07)(known for 19 years). Soon I am going to met up with the soldier soon (Next Month)(known for 26 years). As for the scientist, I probably I have wait a little longer to see him again (Coming May)(known for 27 years). I can't believed it is so long time ago.

More interestingly, the police is 52 years old. The soldier is 61 years old and the scientist is 65.

You might say: Woah! how come you make friend with these old people and one is older than the other.

In fact they are all not so average Jo even though they are all called Jo. Hence I was their friend for so long.

For Stonehenge, first of all it cost another £4.70 (~$14.60)to get in (The Coach Ticket is £20 (~$60) for both Stonehenge and Bath). Later than I found out some Singapore students are not willing to paid that amount to get in. Well I think it is individual choice. A meal in UK easily cost £4.70 too. it is a 5 hours Bus trip from the Uni to Stonehenge. We are allowed to stay there are 1.5 hours. Which is exactly the length inclusive queuing up to buy ticket, listen to the audio descriptions, and buys some souvenirs. (Well I did not buy much souvenirs and it is twice as expensive compare to other sites that I visited)

It is freezing cold (it is more the wind than the temperature) to visit Stonehenge and take photos at this point of the year. My hand is numb after some shots and I have to wear gloves.

okay, you may ask what is so special about this meal. Well the main difference between this and other normal meal is the rice. I used coconut milk to cook the rice. The only issue here is I don't have ikan bilis and sambal chillies.

It is microwave teriyaki chicken rice. This round is quick meal. Basically, it only took me 5 minutes to prepare and 15 minutes to cook. While the meal get cooked, I was free to get to do something else.

Basically it is just put the chicken into microwave and the rice to rice cooker. Hence it super easy to do. No real skill needed. Well you need to know how to use microwave to cook chicken actually.

The table arrangement looks like mickey mouse right? Except I did not put the cucumber, tomatoes and the chili sauce that shows mickeys face. ;) I leave it to your imagination how it would look it.

New Macbook Pro

My current notebook is too old and not stable. Recently just called up IBM to get it fixed. The fan was giving lots of problem and it's having over heating problem.

I didn't really have a choice, hence I have bought a new notebook.
Yes, it is expensive, Apple is my only choice, as I can get a student discount.
Other brand at the same category is more expensive. Moreover, they all don't support
both XP and Vista. So this really left me with the only 1 choice.

Well, I got it up and running with iWork 08 as well. It cost me £1240 in total.
That is after student discount. It is roughly same price in Singapore, if you buy it in a normal apple shop.

OMNet++ is a simple simulation tools for network simulation. It is free for non-commercial usage and it is quite easy to setup as it runs on Windows XP.

To make life simple for myself and others, here is a short summary for the installations. Use Internet Explorer for the following downloads, as Microsoft will do the necessary WGA checks.

Visual C++ Express 2005	Platform SDK from Microsoft	Download OMNet++ version 3.3
Download GViewer version 4.8	Download Ghostscript 8.53	Download Visual C++ 2005 patch Lib for OMNet++
Download VIM version 7.1

Step 1) Install Visual C++
Just use the default setting would do.
I choose full installation which includes MSDN library as well as MS SQL database. It downloads both the MSDN library and MS SQL, hence it will take a while.

Step 2) Install Platform SDK
Create a temp folder at C:\ named TEMP-PSDK
Create a temp folder at C:\ named PSDK

Double click on PSDK-FULL.EXE,
It will create 2 files, <PSDK-FULL.bat and Extract.exe>

Opens Command Prompt and goes to TEMP-PSDK
Type the following:

C:\> PSDK-FULL.bat C:\PSDK
C:\> C:\PSDK\SETUP.EXE

Basically, what you have downloaded needs to be extracted before you can do the installation. The batch files and extract program will be extracted once you run PSDK-FULL.EXE. By the running the batch file extracts the actual installation files.

Step 3) Install OMNET++
First >> Install GhostScript, GViewer and VIM
Just use the default setting

Next >> Install OMNETPP-3.3-win32.exe
Uncheck the box that mentioned Visual C++ 6 integration
When it comes to the point for Ghostscript path use the following.
C:\Progra~1\gs\gs8.53\bin\gswin32c.exe
*Installer does not understand blank space

Next >> Unzip Visual C++ 2005 patch Lib for OMNet++
Overwrite the library file for vc80 with the unzip library file at
>> C:\Program Files\OMNeT++\lib

Next >> Edit configuser.vc using VIM
Append at the end of the file with the following:

几年一度的国际大专辩论会又来了，今年轮到中央电视台来举办。跟以往一样，中央电视台总喜欢搞新花样，今年改名叫2007国际大学群英辩论会。辩手也从四名，改成三名。当然看这节目，总比看校花校草来得强。跟以往一样，非汉语主流国家将由大陆的一些大学事先“喂招”并选拔。成功入围的将会是辩论会的B组。
